Nicholas Carstoiu: FIRST PRIZE IN ROMANIA.
FOR VOLUNTEERING.
A good moment to talk to you about volunteers.
On 30 August 2026, Nicholas Carstoiu won First Prize in the "Young Leader in Volunteering" category at Gala Voluntarului Social Romania 2026. At the same event he also received Second Prize in the "Most Dedicated Volunteer" category. The gala was held in Pucioasa, Dambovita, within the Erasmus+ project "Volunteer for a Life Without Barriers".
On the morning of August 30, while my name was being called on a stage in Pucioasa, I was in a car on my way to Mures county, together with the UNICEF Children’s Board of Romania, leaving for a four-day volunteering action. I wasn’t in the hall.
My dad went up in my place. He accepted First Prize - “Young Leader in Volunteering” and Second Prize - “Most Dedicated Volunteer” for me, and he said something I only found out about later: that I was away doing exactly the things this award is for.
I’m seventeen and a half. When I found out, I didn’t feel like a leader. I felt like a kid who couldn’t believe it.
I received the awards at the Social Volunteer Gala Romania 2026, part of the project “Volunteer for a Life Without Barriers,” coordinated by the TB - Think Big Association together with Educativ, the Romanian Youth Movement for Democracy, and Eco-Razeni from the Republic of Moldova, with the support of Erasmus+.
I could make this whole thing about me. But that wouldn’t be fair. Because if I’m honest, this award isn’t only mine.
I’ve been volunteering for many years. Long enough to understand something you can’t see from the outside: volunteering isn’t about you. It’s about the moment you choose to do something for someone who can’t give you anything back. Not money, not a post, sometimes not even a “thank you.” And you do it anyway.
Over these years I’ve met a lot of teenagers who volunteer. And here’s a secret: most of them aren’t the richest, or the most put-together, or the ones who have the most. They’re normal kids who sometimes give from the little they have. Who wake up early for a project instead of sleeping in. Who set aside their time - the one thing you never get back - to give it to someone else.
I’ve seen kids do more for strangers than they’d do for themselves. Kids who get tired, who sometimes cry, who don’t get paid, but who show up again next time. Not for awards - most of them will never get one. But because, somewhere inside, they believe the world can be a little better if they help carry it too.
That, to me, is the real face of volunteering. Not the diplomas. The people.
I’ve learned that you can be a leader without leading anyone - just by showing it can be done. I’ve learned that ambition isn’t about being first, it’s about not stopping. And I’ve learned that the best things you do are usually the ones nobody sees.
My heartfelt thanks to TB - Think Big and to Mrs. Alexandra Lucia Grecu for the gala and for choosing to give young people a voice. Thank you to the partners in Romania and Moldova, and to Erasmus+. And thank you to my people - my family, my teachers, my friends - who believed in me before there was any award.
But most of all, I want to thank the other volunteers. The ones no one called up on stage. Because if this award means anything, it’s theirs too.
If you’re a kid wondering whether volunteering is worth it: it is. Not for what you get. For who you become.
And if you ever wonder whether your small gesture matters - trust me, it does. I have two awards that say exactly that. But you have something better: the heart that made you start.
Pe 30 august, în timp ce numele meu era strigat pe o scenă la Pucioasa, eu eram într-o mașină spre județul Mureș, împreună cu Boardul Copiilor din România susținut de UNICEF, plecat pentru o acțiune de voluntariat de patru zile. Nu am fost în sală.
Tata a urcat în locul meu. A primit pentru mine Premiul I - „Tânăr lider în voluntariat" și Premiul II - „Cel mai implicat voluntar" și a spus ceva ce am aflat abia după: că sunt plecat să fac exact lucrurile pentru care primesc premiul ăsta.
Am 17 ani și jumătate. Când am aflat, nu m-am simțit ca un lider. M-am simțit ca un copil căruia nu-i venea să creadă.
Premiile le-am primit la Gala Voluntarului Social România 2026, parte din proiectul „Voluntar pentru o viață fără bariere", coordonat de Asociația TB - Think Big împreună cu Educativ, Romanian Youth Movement for Democracy și Eco-Răzeni din Republica Moldova, cu sprijinul Erasmus+.
Aș putea să vă scriu acum despre mine. Dar ar fi nedrept. Pentru că premiul ăsta, dacă e sincer, nu e doar al meu.
Fac voluntariat de mulți ani. Destul cât să înțeleg un lucru pe care nu-l vezi din afară: voluntariatul nu e despre tine. E despre momentul în care alegi să faci ceva pentru cineva care nu-ți poate da nimic înapoi. Nici bani, nici o postare, uneori nici măcar un „mulțumesc". Și o faci oricum.
Am cunoscut, în anii ăștia, o grămadă de adolescenți care fac voluntariat. Și vă spun un secret: cei mai mulți nu sunt nici cei mai bogați, nici cei mai „aranjați", nici cei cu cele mai multe. Sunt copii normali, care uneori dau din puținul lor. Care se trezesc devreme pentru un proiect în loc să doarmă. Care pun deoparte timpul lor - singurul lucru pe care nu-l mai primești înapoi - ca să-l dea altcuiva.
Am văzut copii care fac mai mult pentru străini decât ar face pentru ei înșiși. Care obosesc, care uneori plâng, care nu sunt plătiți, dar care se întorc data următoare. Nu pentru premii - cei mai mulți nu vor lua niciodată vreunul. Ci pentru că, undeva în ei, cred că lumea poate fi puțin mai bună dacă pun și ei umărul.
Asta e, pentru mine, adevărata față a voluntariatului. Nu diplomele. Oamenii.
Am învățat că poți fi lider fără să conduci pe nimeni - doar arătând că se poate. Am învățat că ambiția nu înseamnă să fii primul, ci să nu te oprești. Și am învățat că cele mai frumoase lucruri pe care le faci sunt, de obicei, cele pe care nu le vede nimeni.
Le mulțumesc din suflet celor de la TB - Think Big și doamnei Alexandra Lucia Grecu pentru gală și pentru că au ales să dea voce tinerilor. Le mulțumesc partenerilor din România și din Republica Moldova și programului Erasmus+. Și le mulțumesc oamenilor mei - familia, profesorii, prietenii - care au crezut în mine înainte să existe vreun premiu.
Dar cel mai mult vreau să le mulțumesc celorlalți voluntari. Celor pe care nu i-a strigat nimeni pe scenă. Pentru că premiul ăsta, dacă înseamnă ceva, e și al lor.
Dacă ești un copil care se întreabă dacă merită să faci voluntariat: da, merită. Nu pentru ce primești. Pentru cine devii.
Și dacă vreodată te întrebi dacă gestul tău mic contează - crede-mă, contează. Eu am două premii care spun exact asta. Dar tu ai ceva mai bun: ai inima care te-a făcut să începi.
